Abstract
417,633. Variable-speed gearing. JANNIN, M., 8, Rue de la Republique, Meudon, Seine-et-Oise, France. Dec. 12, 1933, No. 34955. [Class 80 (ii).] In expanding-pulley belt-gearing comprising a multi-groove pulley having groups 1, 3, 5 and 2, 4, 6 of curved or flat-faced conical flanges, the flanges of each group being connected together so that the groups can be moved towards or away from each other for varying the working diameter of the trapezoidal belts 17, the flanges are removably connected together by rigid means. The pulley-gear may be used in countershaftform to control one of the three elements of an epicyclic train. The flanges of each group may be connected by axial bolts 11 carrying spacing-sleeves 12, passing loosely through flanges of the other group, or simply by axial bolts screwing into each flange of the group. In Fig. 1 all flanges are feathered to the shaft 7, and control-members, not shown, engage grooves 15. In a modification, Fig. 3, not shown, the flanges of one group, separated by spacing-sleeves on the shaft, and keyed, together with the sleeves, thereto, are bolted against a shoulder on the shaft by an end-nut thereon, and those of the other group are secured together by screwed bolts and slide on feathers on the spacing-sleeves of the former group. The groups are constantly pressed together by a spring so that the working-diameter varies automatically in accordance with the belttension. In Fig. 5, a countershaft pulley-gear drives a sun-wheel 145, or annulus of a bevel or spur epicyclic train, the planet-carrier 143 of which is secured to a driving shaft 101. By increasing the ratio of the pulley-gear the driven sun-wheel 147 can be brought to a standstill or reversed. The two flanges 103, 105 of the first driving-pulley are fixed to the shaft 101, its movable flanges 104,106 being connected, through a ball thrust-bearing 142, with the movable flanges 133, 135 of the last drivenpulley, the fixed flanges 134, 136 of which are secured to a sleeve 137 carrying the sun-wheel 145. End-thrust between opposed flanges of the main driving- and driven-pulleys is taken by a ball thrust-bearing 148. On the countershaft, the flanges 114, 116, 117 and 119 are fixed to the shaft 112, whilst the flanges 113, 115, 118 and 120 move together so that the driven-pulley 113-116 contracts whilst the driving-pulley 117-120 expands. Control is effected by turning a sprocket-wheel 128 to move a screwed cage 130 supporting the endflange 120. Belt-tension is adjusted by a handcrank 163, secured to eccentric parts 164 of a shaft which supports the countershaft-frame 123. In a modification, Fig. 7, not shown, the countershaft is stationary and eccentrically mounted, the pulleys being mounted on drums which rotate freely on the shaft. The bevel epicyclic-gearing is mounted inside a drum which supports the first driving-pulley. The gear may be used in motor-vehicles, hoists, machine tools, conveying apparatus, or in the rudders or turrets of warships.
