Abstract

1591. Huth, W. H. Feb. 1. Ships. - Relates to a toy warship which separates into sections and sinks when struck by a toy torpedo. The hull is made in two sections A, B, each of which carries a weight a<1> and is provided with a transverse bulkhead a. The sections are held together by springs c<4>, which are connected by toggle-links c<6>. A movable target c is disposed adjacent to the waterline at one side of the boat and is connected by means of a sliding-rod c<1> with a bell-crank lever c<7>. When the target is struck and forced inwards, the bell-crank lever c<7> breaks the toggle joint, thus permitting the springs c' to disconnect the parts A, B. The bulkheads are of such a height that, owing to the position of the weights a, the water passes over them and the parts A, B sink. A torpedo of any suitable form and driven by any suitable means, for example twisted elastic, is used to strike the target c.
