Specification of Letters 'ietent.
Patented Mar. 15, 1921.
Application filed September 18, 1918. Serial No. 254,634.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHIROZESHA\V hLlUN: UHERJI Mei-rm, a subject of the Emperorot India, residing at Bombay, India have ini'ented certain new and useful improvements in Ships, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to ships or vessels with the object of rendering them unsinkable WAGE struck by a mine, torpedo or other explosive.
The invention consists in providing antight compartments between the upper and lower decks the space below the lower deck being occupied to any desired extent with c\ -JlhlllCiil airtight tanks which are enveloped in sea water. The sides of the ship below the level of the lower deck are composed of network culate around the tanks.
The invention is represented in the annexed diagrammatic drawings applied to a battleship.
Figure l is a cross section of a ship constructed according to this invention and taken on the line 1 l of 2, which latter shows in a general way the internal arrangement of the ship. is a side elevation of the ship partly broken away, illustrating the network structure.
Airtight compartments i are provided between ,t ie decks c and (Z for various uses and the engine and boiler a are placed in a caisson 6 which is watertight. The space below the deck 7. is occupied to any desired extent by cylindrical airtight tanks 9 in two tiers both of which are attached to the deck fr amto allow the water to cir-' ing 6 and the whole are suspended from the deck (Z. These are also attached to the bottom it of the ship forming a strong mass resembling somewhat the structure of a honeycomb. The sides of the ship below the level of the deck d are composed of a very strong network f admitting the sea freely between the cylindrical tanks. This network will also offer considerable resistance to the impact of a torpedo. The forward and after ends of the ship will be plated to facilitate navigation.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. A ship comprising a series of airtight tanks ar 'anged with intervening spaces below the normal water line, and a strong network forming part of the sides of the ship below the water line whereby water has access to the spaces between the tanks.
2. A ship comprising a series of airtight tanks arranged with intervening spaces below the normal water line, a series of watertight compartments above the water line and arranged between upper and lower decks,
, and a strong network forming part of the sides of the ship below the water line whereby water has access to the spaces between the tanks.
in testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PHIROZESHAW MUNCHERJI MEHTA.
li'itnesses K. H. SARKARI, JAL S. RUTNAJUR.
