WILLIAM J. PITT, OF PLYMOUTH, ENGLAND.
LIFE-BOAT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W ILLIAM J PITT, a
subject of the King of Great Britain, and residing at Plymouth, England, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Llfe-Boats, of whlch the following 1s a specification, such as'will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeand usethe same.
This invention relates to, life boats, and
the object thereof is. to provide an improved device of this class which will be safe in use and which may be injured seriously by inward bulging of the hullin any place, or which may be entirely out or broken in two and will still remain afloat; a further object being to provide a boat of the class specified which is simple in construction and comparatlvely mexpensive but which possesses all the qualities necessary to preserve life in case of shipwreck under any conditions.
The invention is fully dlsclosed 1n the following speclficatlon, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are desi nated by suitable reference characters in each of the vlews, 211164111 which Figure 1 is a plan View of the hull por tion of my improved life boat with the deck and all the super-structure removed; Fig. 2- a central longitudinal section thereof on the line 2 2 of Fig. l; and, Fig. 3 a cross section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawing the hull structure only is shown, this being all that is necessary in order to fully illustrate my present invention, but it will be understood that, in practice, the hull is entirely covered by a deck having the usual superstructure and hatches or hatch-ways.
The hull a of my improved life-boat is madeentirely of metal plates and within the hull and extending entirely around the sides, bow and stern of the hull is a main side hull air compartment Z) divided by transverse partition plates 5 forming supplemental air compartments b and centrally and longitudinally of the hull is a main central air compartment 0 divided by transverse partition plates 0 into supplemental central air compartments 0 and entirely inclosing the main central longitudinal air compartment 0, and within the main side hull air compartment b is an elliptical open space 03.
The bottom of the main side hull air compartment b, and the outer side wall "thereof- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented N 17 1914. Application filed June 30,1914. Serial No 848,132. a
tom of the main central longitudinal air compartment 0 is also formed by the'botto-m of the hull as shown at c The space cl around the main central longitudinal air compartment 0 is open at the top and provided with a floor (Z supported by transverse angle-irons d? riveted to the bottom ofthe hull and to. each other and .to
the corresponding walls of the compartments b a-ndc, or these angle-irons may be secured in position in any desiredmanner. The bottom of the hull is also provide with two equally spaced keel plates 6 which are T-shaped in riveted to the hull, and the bottom of the hull is also reinforced centrally and longitudinally by butt-straps 6 The. transverse which extends entirely around the hull are form incross section and i I provided with flanges riveted to the sides 4 V and bottom of the hull, as shown at bfland the top and inner side walls ofthe supplemental air compartments 6 into which the compartment Z2 is divided are formed by "continuous plates 6 having flanges which are riveted to the partition plates 6 at the top thereof, and also the inner edges therei of as shown at Z9 and said continuous plates 1 are also provided Wlth flanges which are riveted to the side and bottomwalls of the hull at 6 The top and sidewalls ofthefsupplemental compartments 0 into which the central main longitudinal compartment 0 is divided are formedby continuous plates a having flanges which are riveted. to the top and side edges of the transverse partition plates 0?, asshown at 0 and the plates 0 are also provided with flanges which are riveted to the bottom walls of the hull at 0.
The partition plates 5 which divide the main side air compartment or compartments 6 are extended upwardly in the form of triangular plates or extensions 6 as shown in F 3, and riveted to. the hullall around the boat, said hullbeing extended above the compartment or compartments 6, as clearly shown in said figure, andthe hull is also provided at the top thereof with a guard rail f and, any desiredrnumber of 75 partition plates 6 ofjthe airfcompartment Z) r transversely arranged seats g may be employed, the ends of which may be supported on angle pieces 9 riveted to the hull, or the sides thereof, and said seats may also be provided with supplemental supports g arranged on, or secured to the top of the cen-,
tral longitudinal compartment 0.
It will beunderstood that my improved 1 life boat may be made of any desired size,
' transverse strain and if broken or cut in two, the separate parts thereof will float and remain safe.
' If a boat made in this manner should be injured by the forcing in of the hull at any point, or the breaking or cutting in two thereof, soas to admit water freely to the space d, the boat or the separate parts thereof would still remain afloat when fully loaded, it being understood that the size or capacity of the air compartments 7) and a is made such as to accomplish this result, and while I have shown and described the preferred detail of the construction of my im provement, it will be understood that changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of. the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for tral longitudinal air compartment being also divided by transverse partitions.
2. A life boat having a main side hull air compartment extending entirely around said 1 hull on the inner side thereof and divided by transverse partitions into supplemental compartments, and a main central longitudinal; air compartment separated from the main side hull air compartment by an open space extending entirely around it, said main central longitudinal air compartment being also divided by transverse partitions, the outer side and bottom walls of the main side hull air compartment being formed by the hull of the boat and the bottom of the main central longitudinal air compartment being also formed by the bottom of said hull.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 9th day of June, 1914.
