Abstract

1077. Calthrop, E. R. May 28, 1914. Pleating.- A parachute cover is pleated along radial lines and folded along concentric circles marked thereon so as to fit into a nest or box on an aeroplane. The radial pleats are made by hand and secured by clips 47, Fig. 7. The cover is folded into concentric layers by means of formers 53, 54. The former 53 is mounted on an adjustable table 50 and consists of a series of deep concentric grooves. The. former 54 comprises a series of separate concentric rings which are lowered successively, commencing with the outside one, in order to force the cover into the grooves of the former 53. In a modification, the lower former 53 is divided into a series of rings which may be moved up and down individually in order to facilitate the folding of the cover.
