[Class 8 (ii)] [See also Groups VI and XVI] A filter element for gasmasks or for gas-filters in general comprises a cylinder of paper or like filter material, preferably formed by securing together the edges of a paper sheet by adhesive, having successive pairs of pleats 4, 5, mutually at right angles to one another and in planes normal to the axis of the cylinder, the pleats being of such depth as to form an octagonal bellows-like structure having when the bellows is collapsed a central rectangular hole. The bellows is secured at each end to plates one of which has a central outlet, and is enclosed in a canister attachable to an ordinary gas-mask canister. The pleating is preferably effected with the aid of a mould formed by securing, between two sheets of canvas, pieces of paste board so shaped and spaced that, on forming the canvas into a cylinder, it folds naturally into the required pleats between the paste-board pieces; the mould is then fully extended, inserted within the paper or like cylinder, and collapsed to produce appropriate folds in the cylinder which remain after removal of the mould.
