Abstract

819,832. Gas filters. GENERAL MOTORS Ltd. March 3, 1958 [March 28, 1957 ; Jan. 25, 1958], Nos. 10162/57 and 2565/58. Class 8(2). [Also in Group 1]. A filter element 53 Fig. 22 of self supporting material, e.g. resin impregnated paper suitable for use in a combined air intake cleaner and silencer for an I.C. engine is formed by telescopically collapsing a hollow tapered shell of the material about a series of axially spaced fold lines 59, Fig. 23. The shell may have a circular, elliptical, triangular or other crosssection ; the narrow end being closed and the free edge 52 of the pleated element 53 is sealed against a rubber bead 55 provided at the inlet of. a casing 54. The element 53 is separated from the silencing chamber 58 by a perforate wall 57. Collapse of a conical shell 10, Fig. 10 may be effected by gripping alternate axially spaced peripheral portions 20 between complementary portions 15, 24 of two sets of telescopically arranged tubular elements 11, 21 constituting inner and outer members 14, 22 of a tool respectively extended within and about the shell 10 ; said tool members 14, 22 then being collapsed resulting in alternate peripheral portions 23 of the shell 10 not gripped by the tool members being folded back to the gripped portions to form an annular element having a concentric series of plates 26 as shown in Fig. 11, said tool members then being disengaged from said,filter element.
