Abstract

480,810. Respiratory appliances. BASSET, J. F. E. Oct. 29, 1936, No. 29467. [Class 81 (ii)] [Also in Groups I and XXVIII] A filter for use in a gas mask comprises a pile or block of paper or fabric sheets which are provided with projections or corrugations, the projections or the crests of the corrugations on adjacent sheets being in contact with one another and the sheets being joined together alternately at opposite edges. Figs. 1 and 3 show two forms of discs which are piled one upon another to form a filter and which are glued together alternately at their outer and inner edges. In another form a band of material is corrugated obliquely with respect to the length of the band which is then accordion pleated. Figs. 5 and 6 show a filter block comprising an accordion pleated band folded into two sections joined together at their ends 9. The block is closed at its upper and lower surfaces by plates 1, 2, the lower plate 2 having an opening 11 forming the outlet of the filter, and also devices 4 for connecting the filter to a support. Air enters round the circumference 6 of the block. Reduced spaces 10 are left between the two sections of the block at the ends where the thickness of the filtering medium is less and the total area of the inlet spaces round the circumference 6 is approximately equal to the area of the outlet spaces.
