Tacheometers.-Rotatable stadia lines for giving reduced horizontal distances, as described in Specification 13,629/13, are turned automatically about the axis of the telescope as this is elevated or depressed. The barrel D, turning within the telescope 0 and carrying the stadia diaphragm d, has a small sphere K, fixed between flanges d<2>, d<3> and kept in contact with a vertical face p<2> on a rod P by means of a helical spring N which tends to rotate the barrel. The rod P has a knife-edge p<1> at one end which contacts with the edge of an annular cam-flange on a fixed plate I contained between the vertical circle G and a fixed casing C. The cam-flange is cut so that the requisite rotation is imparted to the stadia diaphragm d as the telescope and vertical circle G are turned,
