Sextants.-An artificial horizon for sextants &c. consists of a weighted balance a carrying wires e<1>, e<2> for longitudinal adjustment, and a ring g carrying a wire g<2> for transverse adjustment. The balance a can oscillate about the axis b, and the ring g has ball bearings g<1> around its edge so that it can rotate about the axis of the telescope c. Correct adjustment is obtained when the images of the wires e<1>, e<2>, g<2> coincide.
