Nitrates.-In the production of artificial silk, horsehair, &c., and films from solutions of nitrocellulose, the squirting solution consists of a collodion prepared from a nitrocellulose containing 20-30 per cent of water, and the coagulating-bath contains 25-50 vols. per cent of alcohol, while it is maintained at a temperature not above the boiling-point of ether, for example at 35À5‹ C. The collodion may be prepared with a mixture of alcohol and ether, in which the former predominates.
