Abstract
9867. Akt. - Ges. der Maschinenfabriken Escher, Wyss, et Cie. June 7, 1913, [Convention date]. Plant.-Ships with three or more propeller shafts have at least two shafts driven solely by steam turbines, and the other shaft or shafts are driven solely by electromotors fed by a turbine - dynamo plant. The shafts 1, 2 are driven by electromotors 5, 6 fed by a dynamo 8 driven by an auxiliary high-speed turbine 7, and are in operation for cruising speeds. Steam is passed on from the turbine 7 to the turbines 9, 10 so as to rotate the screws idly on the shafts 3, 4 and prevent them from acting as drags. For high-speed work, the shafts 3, 4 are driven by the turbines 9, 10 using live steam; an increased supply of steam is also given to the turbine 7 and the exhaust fed to the lower stages of the turbines 9, 10. A single shaft may be used in place of the shafts 1, 2, and at cruising speeds the turbine 7 may discharge to the condenser while the turbines 9, 10 are fed with a small quantity of live steam.
