Abstract

9851. Allison, J. J. C., and Waller, J. April 21. Operating doors by weights and cord arrangements and hydraulically.-Doors, normally shut, in mines are opened by the force of an explosion so as to release the gases into the return and upcast. Three types of doors are used, namely, (I) doors for regular communication, (2) valve stoppings in cross-passages, and (3) time - valve stoppings in cross-passages. The first type, Fig. 6, consists of a heavy door j turning on an axis j<1> by means of arms j<5>, which are pivoted on the centre line of the door ; a cord j<3> is passed over pulleys j<2>, j<4> and is weighted at k to keep the door closed, or an hydraulic cylinder may be used as described below. The second type of door consists of a weighted selfclosing valve stop h, Fig. 3, bolted to a massive brick or cement bed. The third type is similar, but includes an hydraulic cylinder i, Fig. 5, provided with a cataract.
