Abstract
617,729. Gas turbines. MORDELL, D. L., and HOLLIDAY, J. B. Oct. 25, 1946, No. 31795. [Class 110 (iii)] Two gas turbine sets 10, 11 drive an airscrew 16 through over-running clutches 14, 15 and reduction gearing 17. When one turbine set ceases to operate, the fuel supply to the other set is reduced during the period of load adjustment. To this end, pipes 37, 38 lead from the fuel supply pipes 33, 34 to a drain 39 and include valves 46, either of which is opened when the other turbine set fails. Each valve is opened by means of a solenoid 44, the circuit of which is closed by contacts in the clutch 14, 15 of the other turbine set, when the driven member of the clutch over-runs the driving member. A dashpot 47 provides for quick closing and a retarded opening of the valve. The circuit of each solenoid 44 includes also contacts 53 which are normally bridged by a, sliding contact 51 actuated by a solenoid 49 in parallel with the solenoid 44. The dashpot 55 retards the movement of -the contact 51 so that the circuit of the solenoid 44 is broken only after a time-interval sufficient for the adjustment of the load. The pitch of the airscrew blades is varied to adjust the load through a servomotor 21 controlled by a speedgovernor 18. Clutches as described in Specification 612,652 may be used in place of the clutches 14, 15. In such case, the temporary rise of pressure in the hydraulic system may be used to close contacts in the circuits of the solenoids 44.
