The valve e has an open centre to permit flow of water in the usual way, but has a passage f by which air carried round between the vanes is conducted to the atmosphere at g. In a modification the valve may be withdrawn completely from the suction pipe, and in a further modification it is shown applied to a pump on a vertical shaft.
