Abstract

8499. British Thomson-Houston Co., [General Electric Co.]. April 3. Fusibde cut-outs.-A fusible electric cut-out is formed of a conductor of metallic cadmium, which may be in the form of a ribbon so thin as to be materially deformed by surface tension when fused. The conductor may be surrounded by a material, for example silicic acid commercially known as Merck's silicic acid,' pure, wet process,' which freely permits such deformation. A cartridge fuse is shown in Fig. 1, in which the cadmium ribbon 1 is enclosed in an insulating-tube 2 packed with silicic acid 5, the ends of the ribbon being soldered centrally in metal end-caps 3. The fuse may be in the form of a thin twisted ribbon, the packing being dispensed with.
