CUT-OUT PLUG.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed March 25, 1898.

Be it known that I, ABNER JOHNSTON, a citi- 'zen of the United States, residing at Jersey City,in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Out-Out Plugs; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to electric cut-outs, and particularly to that class of these devices commonly known as cut-out plugs.

The obj ect of the invention is to so construct such a plug that the fuse may be readily put in place and perfect electric Contact made with the terminals of the plu without the use of solder.

With this end in view the invention consists in the construction hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure l represents a vertical central section through a cut-out plug embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view representing a modification in the adaptation of the invention, while Fig. 3 is a like view of the cut-out plug as ordinarily constructed. a

The cut-out plug, in the main, is of the usual construction, my invention having to do simply with the terminals and the mode of connecting the fuse thereto. Therefore A indicates the vitreous or4 glass cup; B', the cap therefor; C, the lower terminal, and D the other or lateral terminal, the tongue, as E, extending from the terminal D through the wall 0f the cup in the usual manner and the lower terminal being secured in place by plaster-ofparis or other friable material by which the interior of the cup may be coated, as indicated at F.

In the form of plug as ordinarily constructed and as shown in Fig. 3 the fuse-wire G is soldered at its ends to the tongue E and the` upper end of the terminal O. It is a di'iicult matter to accomplish this soldering because of the readily-fusible nature of the wire G and because of the small space within which Patent No. 628,180, dated July 4, 1899.

to manipulate the soldering-iron inconnecting the wire to the terminal C, and much time is consumed in inserting the fuses by this old mode of procedure. These difficulties are readily obviated by forming upon 4or other wise securing to the inner end of the terminal C an open clamp or hook, such as shownat H, and by connecting to or forming upon the tongue E a like clamp or hook, as shown at I. Vitli the two terminals thus equipped with clamps it is aneasy matter to insert the' fuse. It is done by simply making a loopin the lower end of the piece of fuse-wire and pulling the loop firmly up into the hook H and then pressing or drawing the fuse-wire into the hook I, Where it is readily pinched or broken off by the fingers above said hook.
