Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 28, 1914. Serial No. 814,853.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY \V. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electrical Fuses, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to improvements in electrical fuses and methods of making the same. and'has for its object the provision of an improved' fuse of this character which is so constructed as to prevent the substitution of fusible members therein having capacities'different from that for which the fuse is designed,-and the provision of an improved method for forming fusible members of different capacities.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,

The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises an outer tube 1 of insulating material and provided at one end with a metallic cap 2 permanently secured thereto and adapted to constitute one electrical terminal thereof, as will be readily understood. Cap 2 is pro vided with an outwardly extending recess 3 adapted to receive the head 4 of a binding screw 5, .the head 4 of said screw being eX- posed through an opening at the outer end of said recess, as indicated. A securing plate 6 is interposed between the outer end of tube 1 and the outer end of cap 2 with screw 5 passing freely therethrough, said securing plate thus serving as means for swiveling the screw 5 in cap 2 so as to permit of the free turning of said screw. carries an inwardly extending guard post 7 of insulating material and extending inwardly beyond the end of screw 5. An inner tube 8 'of insulating material is arranged to slip freely within tube 1 and is closed at its inner end by means of a metallic closure 9 ce- Securing plate 6 mented therein. One end 10 of a fusible strip 11 is soldered or otherwise secured to the inner side of closure 9 and a threaded nut 12 is also soldered or otherwise secured tO'tlIB inner side of closure 9 in position to receive screw 5, the closure 9 and end 10 of strip 11 being perforated to permit of the passageof said screw. Closure 9 and end 10 of strip 11 are also provided with a perforation 13 which is positioned to pass over guard post 7 to permit engagement of socket 12 with screw 5. By this arrangement, it will be observed, that in order to make electrical connection between the corresponding end of fuse strip 11 and the cap 2, it is necessary that the post 7 and the perforation 13' be properly positioned with reference to screw 5 and socket 9. In practice fuses of different capacities are provided with the post 7. and the perforation 13 in different relative positions with respect to screw 5 and socket 9, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3 so that one inner tube 8 cannot'loe substituted for another inner tube'8 of different capacity, as will be readily understood.
The other end of tube 5 is provided with a metallic plate 14 embedded in a recess in its outer wall and carrying a binding screw 15 having its inner end 16 upset or spread so as to prevent removal thereof. The fuse member 11 has its corresponding end 17 bent outwardly over the corresponding ends of tubes 1 and 8 .and provided with a notch 18 adapted to pass over screw 15. A metallic cap 19 is placed over the other end of tube 1 and is provided with a notch 20 adapted to pass over screw 15, as shown, so as to permit ready removal of cap 19. This furnishes a simple and a convenient means'for anchoring the correspondingend of fuse strip 11 and the cap 19 constitutes a simple Patented Jan. 11, 1916.
and effective electrical terminal for the fuse,
as will be readily understood. the screw 15 serving to secure cap 19 and fuse end 17 in position.
In practice, the fuse strips 11 are made of uniform size and are provided with an oval or other oblong opening 21 at the center thereof, the different capacities being provided for by arranging the opening 21 at different angles to the length of said strip which thus provides different available cross sections of metal at this point in the strip and thus renders the strip of different capacities of electrical conductivity without fusing. This constitutes a simple and effective process for the manufacture of fusi ble members of different electrical capacities.
Tube 8 is provided at one end with a filling 22 of mineral wool or other good heat resisting material which serves to protect screw 5 and guard 7 when the her 11 fuses. The body of tube 8 is also filled with a powder 23 of good heat resisting capacity and the end of tube 8 is sealed by a layer-of parafiin or other suitable material, thus forming the inner tube 8 into a removable cartridge containing a fusible member and complete in itself, so that one cartridge may be readily substituted for another in case of fusing.
WVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A fuse comprising a tubular member; terminal contacts at each end of said tubular member; a fusible member in said tubular member a screw connection between one 'of said contacts and one end of said fusible member; a guard arranged on one of said members in definite relation with said screw to prevent engagement of said screw connection except when said guard and connection are properly arranged; and means on the other member for accommodating said guard set in the same relation to the screw, substantially as described.
2. A fuse comprising a tubular member; terminal contacts at each end of said tubular member; a fusible member in said tubular member; a screw in one of said contacts and arranged to connect with one end of said fusible memfusible member; and a guard pin on said contact projecting beyond said screw, there being an opening in said fusible member adapted to receive said pin, substantially as described.
3. A fuse comprising an outer tube having metallic caps at each end; a screw carried by one of said caps; a guard for said screw; an inner tube; a threaded socket at one end of said inner tube adapted to receive said screw and said inner tube being arranged to receive said guard; and a fusible member in said inner tube and having one end connected with said socket and its other end connected with the cap at the other end of said outer tube, substantially as described.

5. A fuse comprising a. tube having a metallic cap at one end; an inwardly extending screw carried by said cap; a guard for said screw; and a fusible member in said tube and provided at one end with a threaded socket adapted to receive said screw and also. provided with means for accommodat' ing said guard, substantially as described.
