oniran srnrns PATENT OFFICE.
ELECTRGL FUSE.
Application filed March 255, 1911i.
To all iff/mm may concern: lle it known that liiiuii' nl. toons, a
citizen ci the llnited States, and a resident oi the city of Chicago, county oi Cool;a and State oi' illinois, have invented certain new '11 in icc diti'erent capacities from that for which the reference to the accompanying drawing" forming a part of this specication and in which,
Figure l is a side View of fuse emoodying my invention, Fig. 2, an nl View oi the same, Fig. 3, a View of the opposite end, Fig. 4, a longitudinal section of the inse member, and Fig. 5, a section taken on line 5 of Fig. fl, n
The preferred forni ci? construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises an outer tube G ofinsulating material closed at one end by means of a metallic can T and provided at its o tber end with a metallic sleeve 8 projecting slightly beyond the end of the tube. The cap 7 and sleeve 8 serve as means for eiiecting electrical connection with the line terminals in the usual mannen inner tube 9 'oiE asbestos and liquid glassor other insulating material is removably' fitted within tube 6 and is closed at one end by means of plug 'i0 of porcelain, or other readily rangible insulatingnaateriiil which is cemented or cast in said tube. The head l@ is "provided with a' central conical dovetail recess 'il and a conical metallic contact member l2 is arranged in said recess and secured therein by a wall of cement i3, the arrangement being such that upon withdrawal of :member i2 the wedging action thereof w'll fracture the head l0 so to prevent re-use of the inner tube A nietallic plate le is imprisoned between responding end of tube 6 and can T and carries en inwardly projecting pin i5 i'itting the corresponding socket in head 10 dcoince-tion of Letters Patent. and a securing screw i6 is swiveled between plate le and the end of cap "Y in position to engage threads in contact member l2 and ell'ect the fracture of head 10 when tightcned.
i fuse wire 17 is soldered at one end to contact member 1Q and at its other end to a fiat metallic strip i8 whichis provided with a back Hardly turned cuter end 19 passing through. a notch 20 in the protruding end et sleeve S and resting against the outer side or" said sleeve, as shown `in Fig. 4. e. closing disk 2l is fitted within the outer end of sleeve 8 and is provided on one side with a tongue Q2 fitting within a suitable opening in the correspondingportion of sleeve 8 and on its opposite side with an angularly turned u e 23 passing through notcliQO and oif'erlying end i9 of the fusible member. A spring member 24 is secured to the outer side of disk 2l and is singularly turned to overhang tongue and carries a swiveled hinding screw 25 adapted to secure the adjacent parte together, tongue 23 beingr provided with an opening and sleeve 8 with a registering threaded opening, and end 19 with a notch for this purpose, as will be readily understood.
Screw 25 is secured in position by forining an opening: through spring member 2e and upsetting the edges or" said openingr to enlarge the saine. Screw 25 is provided with a groove 27 adiacent its head and is passed through said enlarged opening., whereupon the edges of the opening are again upset into said groove, thus effecting a swiveled connection with said screw. By this arrangement it will be observed that the end of the fusible member may be readily secured so to eiect good electrical contact with sleeve 8 and, that screw 25 may be swung to and from operative position to facilitate suchl connection, but can never be displaced or lost ithout breaking spring member 21. lo aiord further protection, if desired, inner tube 9 may be filled with any of the usual forms oi insu-- lating powders, as will be readily rinden stood.
In use outer casing 6 is furnished in pern marient form and inner 'casings 9 are supplied to replace any destroyed by overloading or otherwise. lililien an inner casing is inserted in an outer casing, the screw i@ is engaged with the socket l2 and tightenc/d to effect good electrical Contact wit screw 16 the plug` 10 is necessarily ruptured and ivill fall apart upon removal from the casing 9. l
ivi-1n@ r have illustrated ma described" the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification Without departing1 from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not Wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set' forth, but desire to. avail myself of such variations 'and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
.1. An' electric fusev comprising` agy fusible member provided with means lfor securing each end-'inr circuit, the means at one end being of adestruetible nature; and means for securingl said fusible member in circuit and destroying' said destructible securing means,` substantially as described.-
electric fuse comprising a fusible member provided With means for securing each fend in circuit, the means at one end beine; of a destmifA le nature; and means for securine" said rlv'ble member in circuit and sin'iultaneously7 destroying said destructible means, substantially as described.
3. An electric fuse comprising a casing; a frangible head at one end of said casing; a 'threaded contact member embedded in said head and larger at its inner than at its outer end; a fusible member connected at one end with said contact member and provided at its other end with means for connecting it in circuit; and a screw con tact member engaging said threaded contact member, substantially as described.
fl. ,lu electric fuse comprisingI an outer tube of insulating` material; a metallic cap closing; one end of said tube; a screw swiveled in said cap and extending into said tube; an inner tube of insulating' material fitting Within said outer tube; a frangible head closing one end of said inner tube; a wedge shaped metallic Contact member embedded in said head and porvided with a threaded socket adapted to receive said screw; a fusible member in said inner tubej;
'and connected at one end with said Wedge shaped Contact; and means for effecting electrical contact With the other end of fusible member,y substantially as described ln testimony whereof l have signe/duly name to this specification in the presence el two sub. cribingwvitnesses; l
