Gear - cutting. - In gear-hobbing machines, mechanism is employed, in addition to the ordinary gearing connecting the blank and hob, to facilitate cutting wheels with odd numbers of teeth. The additional mechanism consists of some form of change gearing v deriving motion from the shaft l, which has a constant velocity relative to the blank table y, through a reversing - gearing t and transmitting through differential e to the hob-driving shaft f. The shafts f, l are also connected by means of the third member of the differential and the ordinary change gearing k, which consists, for example, of sets of wheels to give every ten teeth, the odd teeth being added or subtracted by the. gearing v, which consists of a set giving one to five teeth.
