Pistons; piston packing. -Lubricant is prevented from passing the piston packing-rings and entering the combustion chamber of an internal-combustion engine, by a groove A communicating through holes a with the interior of the piston below the packing. The edge of the groove next to the rings is preferably of smaller diameter than the piston, and the wall of the groove at this edge is inclined. The packing-ring e next to the groove has preferably a stepped radial joint, while the ring f has an oblique transverse joint. The body of the piston below the groove A is perforated. It is stated that the construction makes it possible to cool the piston by copious lubrication, the lubricant being splashed against the piston from the crank chamber.
