Coating.-A protective coating is formed on iron or' steel by exposure to the action of a solution of a manganous compound, such as manganous carbonate, or of metallic manganese in phosphoric acid. The solution may contain a relatively high percentage of manganous compound, and also a considerable quantity of free acid, and manganese dioxide may be added to the bath. Specifications 8667/06, 490/08, 29,504/10, 17,563/11, and 20,798/11 are referred to.
