Abstract

Crucible furnaces.-In a furnace of the kind in which the crucible is removed for pouring, the funnel or tube B for the preliminary heating of the scrap metal is supported wholly within the furnace by a flange 4 resting on a ledge 1 formed in the brickwork. Grooves or passages 6 may be provided either in the flange of the funnel, or in the ledge 1, to allow a portion of the furnace gases to pass to the outside of the funnel. In a modified form, a depending lip or rim is provided to deflect the heating- gases on to the metal in the crucible before passing up through the scrap in the funnel.
