ELECTRIC FURNACE.
Bpecication o1' Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 29, 191 1.
Application led March 16, 1910. Serial No. 549,508.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, LARs YNGsTnoM, av sib'ect ofthe King of Sweden, and resldent' o vcible-shaped furnaces for the reduction of metals from ore by the aid ofelectric current is forcibly acted upon by the heat generated 'b y the current and consequently is rapidly destroyed. The 'said disadvantage is removed in furnaces arranged and charged in accordance with this invention, which furnacesconsist o'f a crucible or the like, forming the working or melting chamber, and a stacleshaped chamber for ceding the material to the Working chamber and lo cated above the working chamber in such manner that there is a ring-shaped space the stack-shaped chamber and the crucible, which space `is filled with material, forming` a substitution for ,the said vault. One or more electrodes are inserted in the furnace through the said -space and consequently surrounded by niaterial.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1` shows schematically an i n a vertical section an electric furnace arranged in accordance with this invention. Fi 2 shows in Ia vertical section a. modified grin of the furnace. Fig. 3 shows in the same manner another form of execution.
Ore,V carbon, fusin charged into the stac Fig.'1` located above the Crucible-shaped furnace 1. The electric current, which may have any suitable number of phases, is suppliedrthrou h the electrodes 3, one. phase of the electrodes. The said electrodes' are inserted through `the material located in the ring-shapedspace 4 between the walls of the chamber '2 andthe crucible material, etc., are -shaped chamber 2,
tifs generated by the current. The furnace 1s chargednot only through thechamber 2 but also through the ring-shaped space 4, so )that the ordlnary heat insulating vault labove the said part of the furnace is'substituted by material, the said material being renewed to the same extent as it is melted. The produced metal and the slag are dis charged at the bottom of the furnace through the tap-hole '6.
The furnace shown schematicall l in Fig. 2 differs from the furnace shown rn Fig. l
by one of the phases of the electric current being led into the furnace through a bottom electrode 7, which consequently 1s protected against combustion by the layer of molten metal, located on the same.
'In Fig. 3 means are shown for cont-rolling the quantity of air passing into the furnace through the space 4. For the said purpose the space 4 is shut olf from the atmospheric yair by a cover 9 preferably of sheet-metal and located between the walls of the chamber 2 and the Crucible and provided with chargin openings 8 with closing means. The sai openings 8 may simultaneously be adapted as air-holes. Instead of the said arrangement the charging-opening of the chamber 2 may be provided wlth a bell 10 or be closed in any other suitablenianner and an outlet pipe 11 for the as connected with the top art of the cham er, which pipe is provide with a damper 12. In the case last mentioned a further controlling of the quantity of air assing through be effected connecting a fan 13 with the pipe 11. The cover 9, provided with charg in'g openings ma evidently be used in combination with t described- Having now described by invention, what' I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentis:
In an electric furnace, the combination ofl a crucible-like working `chamber and a stack-shaped chargin chamber located above the said chamber an projecting into proximity t'o the mouth of said working chamber leaving a space between the walls of the two chambers at the mouth of the working chamber and electrodes "oecting into the working chamber in the sai' e controlling means last space between 10Q the wells of the two plumbers, the said In witness wbeieof,l'havehereunto ed electrodes being held in position bythe mamy name in the presence of two subscri ing. terial to be treated, whereby the said matewitnesses.
rial to be treated may form'a substitute for "LABS YNG'r-STRM.v -5 a cover and the heat insulating brick-work Witnesses: commonly employed` between the walls of l .ERNIE Bmmmmlm,`
the two chambers. l H. W. RYDBEHG.
