Abstract

26,131. Moore, M., and Heskett, T. J. Nov. 26. Metallurgical furnaces.-In a direct process for obtaining iron, in which the ore is reduced in one or more towers or cylinders and absorbed in a castiron bath as described in Specifications Nos. 4975 and 5041, A.D. 1904, the flow of the reducing gas is controlled so that a part passes through each reducing tower and the rest passes with the reduced iron to the furnace containing the molten mass. Each tower A may contain checkerwork to retard the descent of the ore, and is provided at the top with a damper G' to regulate the flow of the reducing gas ; the upper half is also provided with an air supply F for the purpose of heating the ore prior to its reduction. The lower part of the tower communicates with a gas furnace E by a passage A3, into which the gas from a producer B flows. Above the furnace is a regenerative chamber I for air. One or more cupolas may be used to melt wrought iron or scrap steel for supplying the furnace E, the metal from which may be run into a refining-furnace for further treatment.
