Abstract

Magneto-electric machines; magnets. - To dispense with the usual hole bored in the crown, the permanent magnets of ignition magnetos, moving-coil instruments, &c. are made in the form of a mutilated tube, either from a pair of curved horse-shoe magnets, Fig. 3, or from a single portion, Fig. 6. Plates of diamagnetic material r, Fig. 1, such as zine, may be arranged between the armature laminations and the solid armature end cheeks.' Either the armature a or the magnet b may have an exaggerated movcment imparted to it relatively to the timing- lever in order to equalize the sparking at the advance and retard positions of the lever. For example, the timing-lever f has a slot g engaging a pin h on a ring i loosely mounted on an eccentric boss j on the casing of the machine; another pin k on the ring i engages a slot in a frame k<1> supporting the magnet b. The distributor may be arranged in axial alinement with the armature and may be driven by bevelgearing housed within the crown of the magnet.
