Abstract

19,694. Plottier, A. Sept. 1. Hand driving-mechanism for cycles &c. comprises a free-wheel and chain mechanism adapted to be actuated by a single lever 5 secured to the undivided bandle-bar 4, which is fulcrumed on a forwardly-disposed supplementary fork 10 connected by a bifurcated arm 2 with the steering-stem 1. On one end of the axle of the front wheel is fixed a free-wheel pinion 6<1>, and on the other end a freewheel pinion 6<2>, and round each pinion passes a cbain 7 the front portions of which are connected by a cable 8 passing over a reversing-pulley 9 on the supplementary fork. The back portion of the chain passing round the pinion 6<1> is continued by a cable 11, passing over a pulley 12 on the arm 2 and thence under a pulley 13<1> on the driving-lever, and is attached at 14 to the arm 2, and the back portion of the chain passing round the pinion 6<2> is continued by a cable 15, passing over a pulley 13<2> on the lever, and secured at 16 to the steering-fork. Up-and-down motion of the handle-bar thus drives the pinions so that when one is rotating forwardly to drive the cycle, the other is rotating freely backwards. The travel of the chain is twice that of the lever ; the gear of the cycle is altered by altering the point of attachment of the pulleys 13<1>, 13<2> on the lever. In a modification, the cable 11 passes over the pulley 12 and is attached at 17<1> to the lever, and the cable 15 is directly attached at 17<2> to the lever. In this case the travel of the chain is equal to that of the lever. The driving- mechanism may work in combination with the ordinary pedal gear.
