Abstract

Weight of rider, mechanism for propelling by, combined with other driving-mechanism.-Cycles &c. are arranged to be driven by a spring, adapted to be wound up by the backward rotation of the cranks, and by the depression of the saddle under the weight of the rider. As it is wound up, the spring in the casing 2 is held in tension by a pawl 5, and when it is desired to drive by the spring, the pawl is released by the operation of a lever 7. The saddle is mounted upon bolts 17, from which pressure is transmitted to a rack 15 sliding upon the frame, a pinion 25, and chain gearing 28, 29, 30 being used to transmit the motion to the road wheel. The saddle is held raised by a lever 22<a> and a toothed segment 23, and when the spring in the casing has run down, the lever 22<a> is released for driving from the saddle. A hinged guide-bolt 20<a> is provided at the front of the saddle. A spring 13 is arranged below the rack.
