Abstract

17,887. King, G. July 30. Driving-mechanism.-In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the pedals are connected to the usual sprocket-wheel A by means of epicyclic gearing. The cranks d are keyed to an axle D, mounted in the hollow axle a to which the chain-wheel A is keyed. A wheel F keyed to the loosely-mounted pedal axle E drives a wheel C keyed to the axle a. The wheel F is prevented from rotating by a rod G' keyed on the axle E and connected by a pivoted rod G to the frame. Fig. 7 shows a similar gearing applied to the rear wheel. Motion is conveyed from the crank axle to a wheel k, loosely mounted on the rear-wheel axle K. A crank k<1> secured to the wheel k carries a wheel F, whieh drives a wheel C keyed to the axle K. The wheel F is prevented from turning by rods as before. In another form, the cranks k' are driven by pedals secured on their ends, the wheel k being dispensed with. Fig. 3 shows a modification of the form shown in Fig. 1, in which the wheel F is mounted in the middle of the crank, and is connected by a chain h and wheel H to a stationary wheel keyed to the pedal axle. The rotation of the pedal axle is prevented by a rod J sliding in a tube j pivoted to the frame.
