Abstract

5353. Norton, D. E. March 4. Cranks; crank linkages. - Relates to variable-leverage crank mechanism for bicycles, tricycles, &c. A spindle a fixed in the bracket b has loosely mounted on it two chain-wheels d geared with the driving-wheel, and carries forwardlyprojecting arms f to which the cranks g are pivoted. The chain-wheels carry slotted arms h or their equivalents which are actuated by the cranks through antifriction rollers j. During the downstroke, the rollers travel towards the ends of the slots &c., but the reverse movement takes place during the up-stroke. The invention is also applicable to chainless driving-gear.
