638. Mattke, K. Jan. 9. Body motion and weight of rider, propelling by.-Auxiliary driving-mechanism for bicycles, of the kind in which up-and-down movements of the saddle transmit motion to the driving-wheel, comprises a toothed saddle support a, guided with its lower end in a sleeve d, and gearing with a toothed wheel b mounted loosely on the axle of a chain-wheel c. The saddle is driven down by the weight of the cyclist, and is returned by an adjustable spring e located in the sleeve, the up-and-down motion rotating the toothed wheel, and, by means of pawls, carried by the toothed wheel and engaging in a ratchet-wheel keyed on the axle of the chainwheel, rotating the driving-wheel. A bolt h locks the saddle support when the auxiliary driving-mechanism is not in use. The pedaldrive of the bicycle may be of the free-wheel type so that the auxiliary mechanism alone may be used.
