Abstract

15,876. Hofmann, J. July 11, 1912, [Convention date]. Pneumatic springs. - Relates to pneumatic springs for vehicles, of the kind in which a diaphragm arranged in a compressed air chamber and supported thereby is acted upon by a plunger, and consists in increasing the surface of the plunger by providing projections or recesses which serve to make the surfaces of the plunger and the casing more nearly equal and therefore prevent the formation of folds on the diaphragm when it rolls off the cylinder on to the plunger. Fig. 1 shows the flexible diaphragm 14 with its edge clamped between the parts 1, 13 of a casing connected with the vehicle frame, and its centre portion bearing upon a plunger 5 guided by a sleeve 4 in the casing 1 and connected with the wheel-axle 9 by a ball-jointed rod 7. The chamber A is connected with a source of air pressure by a pipe 16, a common air reservoir being provided for two or more of the springs. The plunger and casing are of the elongated form shown in cross-section in Fig. 3, grooves 6 being provided in the sides of the plunger for the purpose stated above. In the case of a cylindrical plunger and casing, the grooves may extend over the whole of the periphery of the plunger.
