Abstract
20,360. Rank, W. M. S pt. 6. Spring wheels with continuous outer rigid ring and pneumatic and like cushions.-A spoke consists of telescopic cylinders. 2, 3, pivoted to the rim and hub respectively. Two pistons 16, 18, forming a floating combination, a r e connected by a rod 12 passing through a gland 11 in a short cylinder 8 fixed to the bottom of the cylinder 3. The cup-leathers fitted to the pistons face towards the hub and act automatically as valves, so that compression chambers 14 are formed at the hub, and vacuum chambers at the rim. The central chamber is always open to the atmosphere through a slot 23 and a port 24 in the outer cylinder. A channel 25 is formed in the rod by means of which air can pass to the rear of the piston 18 and by the cup-leather into the chamber 14. In this manner after a few revolutions air is pumped into the chamber and maintained at a pressure depending upon the distance of the end of the groove from the piston, which is set primarily according to the sensitiveness of the spoke required. A helical spring 22 in the middle chamber assists the return of the pistons. One spoke is fixed rigidly to the hub.
