Abstract

17,639. Bangs, A. R. July 29, 1908, [Convention date]. Air tubes and chambers.-The air-pressure in a pneumatic tyre is maintained automatically by means of plunger-pistons supporting the load and moving in compression cylinders combined with pumps of smaller diameter. A metal tube d, Fig. 1, of pear-shaped section containing compressed air is enclosed in an ordinary cover c and rim l. Screwed into the tube are openended cylinders f integral with small co-axial pump cylinders h and containing hollow pistons y with rectangular heads 2, Fig. 2, supporting the inside of the cover. A rod n secured to the piston y is formed with a head o acting as a piston in the pump. An aperture m connects the tube d with the cylinder f. The pump n is open to the atmosphere either through apertures w in a cap v and the tube, which is not fitted to the rim in an air-tight manner, or through an aperture in the base of the rim, the open cylinder n in this case being screwed into the tube. Valves t in the head o and u in the pump allow air to pass from behind the head into the tube on return of the piston y. A relief valve 6<@>. Fig. 2, prevents excessive pressure. The common tube d may be dispensed with, and each pair of cylinders worked individually.
