[Class 8(i)] [Also in Group XXXII] An oscillating damping suspension system for road vehicles (see Group XXXII), also comprises means for generating storable compressed air during relative oscillation of the vehicle frame and wheel axles. In the arrangement shown, a pair of recesses located on either side of a central recess 2 in a casting block 1, each comprises upper, intermediate and lower chambers 3, 4 and 5 respectively, in which are slidably housed pistons 19, 28 and 31. The piston 19 which is connected by a piston rod 20 to a vehicle frame member 14, is provided with valved passages 27 whereby during relative oscillating movement of the vehicle frame and axle, air which is drawn into the upper part of chamber 3 through valved intake pipes 24, is compressed during the upward stroke of the piston 19 and is impelled through passes 27 to a zone 3a, from which it is subsequently forced through valved passages 29 in the piston 28 into a zone 4a of chamber 4, during downward movement of piston 19. Continued downward movement of piston 19 forces the compressed air through valved passages 30 in the piston 31, the subsequent downward movement of which against a spring 40, expels the compressed air through a non-return valve 43 and conduits 44, 45 to a storage tank on the vehicle. Axial alignment of pistons 19 and 28 with piston 31 during movement of the former into the chambers 4 and 5 respectively of the recess, is maintained by stems 35 and 37 on the pistons 19 and 28 which respectively engage recesses 36 and 38 formed in pistons 28 and 31. The compressed air stored in the tank may be used for recharging the pneumatic tyres of the vehicle.
