Abstract

14,026. Shearn, R. June 17. Carburetting.-A carburettor, especially for internal-combustion engines, comprises an annular body containing saturated absorbent material, ports for the passage of air being so arranged that air is drawn through the absorbent material and also direct to the inner space, and means being provided for regulating the passage of the air. In the form shown, the carburettor comprises a fixed sleeve c and a movable sleeve e each formed with ports c', c<2> and e<1>, e<2>, one end of the sleeve e being formed with ports e<4> arranged to register more or less with ports f<4> in the end of the casing a, and the sleeve c being surrounded by absorbent material d dipping into liquid maintained at constant level in the casing a. Air admitted at a' passes through the absorbent material and the ports c<1>, and the carburetted air mixes with air entering through the ports e<2>, e<4>, the mixture passing out at the end c' to the engine. The sleeve c is rotatable to vary simultaneously the effective area of the ports e<1>, e<2>, e', and a sleeve g is longitudinally adjustable to control the richness of the mixture by varying inversely the total areas of the ports e', c<2>. The absorbent material may be mounted on a lining of gauze or on a slotted sleeve spaced from and surrounding the sleeve c. and the air inlets may be provided with perforated covers l. In modifications, the sleeves e. g are replaced by a single sliding and rotating sleeve, or the ports e<4> may be replaced by ports in the sleeves c, e; or the mixture is arranged to be withdrawn from both ends to two or more cylinders of an engine; or the carburettor may be arranged with its axis vertical.
