Connecting uppers to insoles and soles.-The skived ends of short pieces E, F of leather, which are secured by adhesive in the usual way to form a length of welting, are further secured by rows A, B of stitching; the row A is located as near as possible to the outer edge of the welt so that it is removed in the subsequent trimming operation, while the row B is located further from its edge so that it is not cut when that edge is skived for securing it to the upper, yet is hidden by the overhanging part of the upper when the shoe is finished. For Baltimore shoes, alternate wide and narrow lengths of leather are sewn together in the manner described.
