Connecting uppers to soles.-In the manufacture of a shoe without an insole, the upper materials comprising the upper proper with its lining stitched to it, a toe-box blank, and a partly moulded heel counter are assembled and secured by a row of stitches 26, Fig. 6, after which they are sewed to a sole lining 27, Figs. 6 and 14, which is truncated as shown and is preferably made of flexible material, such as canvas, which enables the sewing to be performed by an overedge stitching-machine. A last is then inserted in the shoe, drawing the margin of the upper under the edges of the last, and, after the toe and heel ends of the upper have been slit and the stiffening-compound in the toe-box and heel counter has been softened, the toe and heel ends are wiped over the last, such as by a bed-lasting machine, and held in place until the stiffening- compound hardens. A sole 28, Fig. 5, to which may have been secured a shank-stiffener, is first cemented to the bottom of the shoe and afterwards secured by a seam 31, which is located outside the seam of the sole lining.
