Residual gases.-In producing a vacuum in metallic-filament lamps by means of low temperatures, for example by immersing them in liquefied hydrogen or connecting them to a similarly cooled vessel, any hydrogen in the bulb is removed in the form of a condensable compound by introducing a suitable gas and effecting the combination of the gases by heating the filaments. Oxygen and carbon-dioxide are given as examples of a suitable gas, the carbon-dioxide snow formed in the latter case facilitating the production of the vacuum by an absorptive action.
