Waste products, treatment and utilization of.-A reagent for softening water is obtained by evaporating sulphate lyes to dryness at a low temperature and fixing the free alkali by carbon dioxide by exposure to the atmosphere or to gases rich in carbon dioxide. Alternatively, the lyes may be treated with carbon dioxide before evaporation.
