Abstract

26,808. Frank, A. Nov. 28, 1905, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Hydrogen is produced pure from water gas by passing it over carbide, for example calcium carbide, at a temperature exceeding 300‹ C., so fixing or absorbing the other constituents. Carbon monoxide and dioxide may be absorbed previously, wholly, or partly, in suitable media, such as an acid, neutral, or alkaline solution of cuprous chloride and lime, respectively. The water gas is dried as much as possible before treatment with the carbide. The calcium carbide may be pure or mixed with other carbides, or with inert materials that promote the absorption, or with such as reduce the temperature of absorption, for example carbonates, halogenides, and sulphates. Absorbed carbon monoxide may be separated from the cuprous chloride solution by subjecting it to a vacuum. The solution may then be used again in the process.
