Abstract

249,914. Petersen, H. Dec. 29, 1924. Sulphuric acid.- The filling or packing material used in the reaction enclosures of a plant for the manufacture of sulphuric acid according to the chamber method is such that its diameter does not exceed 40 mms. and may be as small is 1 mm., the smaller filling being employed in the enclosures functioning a.s Gay Lussac towers. In the complete plant shown in the Figure, in addition to the acidforming enclosures 2, 4 an additional enclosure 3 is employed in which filling having a diameter greater than 40 mms. may be used. This enclosure 3 may be irrigated with water, sulphuric acid or nitrous-sulphuric acid having a concentration of 63‹ BÚ or may not be irrigated at all, and the gases preferably pass through it in a downward direction. Acid of 54-58‹ BÚ is used in the main acid-forming enclosures 2, 4 and the enclosures 1, 5 function as Glover and Gay Lussac towers respectively.
