9562. Woodward, C. L., Evershed, W. P., [trading as Woodward & Sons, J.], and Hill, C. Feb. 27. Breech actions, dropdown barrel. -Relates to the ejecting and cocking mechanism of " under-and-over " guns, and consists in the following construction. The ejector hammer 8, spring 9, and sear 10 are mounted in a box 7 fixed in the side recess between the two barrels independently of the fore-part. The sear 10 is tripped by a lever 15 which, when the gun is opened, is engaged by the projecting end of the cocking-rod 18 if the firing-hammer has fallen. The cocking-mechanism comprises a sliding rod 18 and a pivoted cam 22. When the gun is opened, the rod 18 is pressed back by a cam surface on the fore-part, and the cam 22 is thereby rotated and the hammer 29 cocked. When the cam 22 is raised, as shown in Fig. 10, a nose 32 thereon enters a notch 33 in the cocking-rod 18 and holds it back. The cam is retained in its raised position, when the gun is closed, by a spring detent 31, Fig. 1.
