Abstract

7534. Smith, P. M., and Mitchell, J. G. March 31. Spring hinges.-A spring hinge for a door or window in which none of the parts project from the faces of the door &c. or its frame comprises a butt-plate 4 let into the door frame 3 and provided with a casing 5 containing a coiled spring 8, which acts through a piston 7 upon the contour of a projection 17 upon the hinge member 16. The members 4, 16 are connected together by the interengaging projections 15, 10, 17 and pivot pin 11. The projection 17 is provided with a flat face 12 to hold the door in the closed position and two flat faces 18 to hold the door fully open in either direction, the corners 19 being rounded to facilitate movement. When used for doors opening one way only the projection 17 is formed with a stop projection 20, Fig. 3. In this form, the corner 19 may be flattened to retain the door partly open. Recesses 13, 14 are provided in the members 4, 16 respectively to allow the passage of the projections 15, 10, 17. For heavy doors, two or more springs may be provided in each hinge. The spring tension may be adjusted by the screwed plug 6.
