Abstract

2468. Whiting, W. J. Jan. 30. Breech actions, sliding breech-block; breech actions, sliding barrel and breech-block; safety appliances applicable generally. -Relates to magazine-controlled safety devices of the kind in which, when the magazine is withdrawn, a spring catch is adapted to engage directly with a member of the firing-mechanism, and consists in adapting the spring catch to engage either the sear or the sear-operating member. The safety mechanism does not depend for its action on any hand-operated or hand-controlled part, and is preferably enclosed in the gun frame so that it cannot be hand actuated. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the safety comprises a laterally moving spring bolt g having a projection g' which engages behind the sear e when the magazine b is removed. In the modification shown in Fig. 10, the projection g<7> engages the underside of the searactuating limb d<1>, which is thus wedged between this projection g<7> and the cam e<2> of a hand - operated safety - device. The safetydevice g may be pivoted instead of sliding. It is also stated in the Provisional Specification that the safety-device may engage some other member of the firing-mechanism.
