Belts.-An extensible belt is constructed of material capable of stretching to at least one and a half times its length, carrying pieces of inextensible material to make driving contact, for the purpose of automatic variation of speed ratio with varying load. Fig. 3 shows one form of construction in which strips of leather b are mounted on a rubber band a; Fig. 9 shows another form in which leather or wooden blocks b are threaded on rubber strands. Figs. 13, 16, and 18 show constructions using similar blocks connected by springs.
