Abstract
18,117. Marston, S., and Hughes, R. T. Aug. 6. Circular-saw machines. -Apparatus for sawing structures either horizontally or vertically, particularly applicable for cutting-up iron or steel ships, comprises (1) a travelling carriage 1, Fig. 1, which is mounted on wheels 2, 3 running on rails 21, 31 secured to the ship and is guided by wheels 22 engaging the rails 31, (2) a crosshead 7 guided on vertical pillars 8, 9 on the carriage 1 and supported by screwed shafts 13, and (3) a motordriven saw 6 carried by an arm 62, Fig. 3, adjustable in the crosshead. A motor 10 mounted on the carriage 1 rotates, through gearing 101, 111, a shaft 11 carrying bevel-wheels 113 which drive in either direction a bevel-wheel 181 on a shaft 18. The shaft 18 rotates, through toothed and worm gearing, the axle 23 of one of the wheels 2. The shaft 11 may be put into gear, through one of two differently-sized pinions 121, with a shaft 12 operating the two screwed shafts 13 for raising and lowering the cross-head, and also, through bevel-gearing 113, 141 and 114, 151, with shafts 14, 15 for adjusting the arm 62. The shaft 14 drives, through pinions 142, 142', 143 and a worm 145, a worm-wheel 62<1> for turning the saw from an horizontal to a vertical position, and the shaft 15 drives, through bevel-gearing 152, 153 and toothed gearing 161, 162, a pinion 163 on a screw engaging the arm 62 for adjusting it horizontally, The cross-head 7 is partly counterbalanced by weights 81, 91.
