Sharpening.-The spiral knives used in leatherworking machinery are sharpened by an emery wheel adapted to be raised and lowered and to be displaced in an horizontal circle while in motion. A vertical spindle g is slidably supported in a bushing f and is rotated by bevel-gearing e, f ; it carries at its lower end a worm-wheel k<1>, enclosed in a dust and oil proof casing i. The spindle g is supported by collars g<1> in a bracket h which can be adjusted vertically on a slide a<2> by a screwed rod l and band-wheel l<1>. The bracket h is provided with a circular flange h<1> carrying a casing i ; in bearings on this casing is held a worm i<1> which engages with a worm-wheel k<1>. The emery wheel j is mounted on the worm spindle, and a hardened steel centre is provided to take up the thrust on the spindle. The cylinder carrying the knives p* is mounted on rollers in a frame p which can be traversed on rollers p' running on rails r parallel to its axis, the rails being mounted on trestles a which can be withdrawn on rollers t. A treadle m, the arm m<1> of which engages the rod l, is provided to raise the emery wheel to enable it to be transferred from one blade to another.
