Abstract

13,144. Bevis, R. R., and Gibson, J. H. May 31. Milling helical surfaces.-A machine for machining the surfaces of screw-propeller blades has a radial cutter-frame which is vibrated about a vertical column and gears with a spiral guide, the work being clamped with the column passing through its axis. The milling-cutters 15, Fig. 4, of which three are shown, cut with the front edges, which are arranged in a radial vertical plane, and are adjusted radially after each cut by a hand-operated screw 27; they are driven by bevel-gearing from a shaft 33. The spiral guide 10, Fig. 5, is adjustable for different pitches, and carries a toothed rack 22; it is engaged by two rollers on the cutter-frame 6, one of which runs on the top and the other of which engages the underside of a projecting portion. The cutter-frame is counterweighted, and carries a motor 11 driving the shaft 33; from this shaft a pinion 40, Fig. 3, engaging the rack 22 is driven by worm gearing. The pinion 40 is carried in a swinging arm 54 adjusted by worm-operated screws 53 driven from a hand-shaft 52; since the pinion cannot move off the rack, these screws cause the whole frame to move up or down to adjust the cut.
