16,540. Fornaca, G. July 15. Variable speed toothed gearing; clutches, friction.-Relates to variable-speed and reversing gearing in which hydraulically-operated multiple-plate clutches are employed. The driving-shaft 1 carries loose toothed wheels 2 gearing with wheels 3 on a shaft 4, which carries a bevel-wheel 5 gearing with bevelwheels 6, 7, either of which may be connected to the driven shaft 8 by clutches 9, 10, thus giving two speeds in both forward and reverse directions. The wheels 2 are connected to their shaft by plate clutches operated from a reservoir 12 and pump 11, through a valve 13 and pipes 14, 15. The pipes 14 carry liquid to the end plates of the clutches for engagement, and the pipes 15 apply liquid between the plates to ensure disengagement. A pipe 16 returns liquid collected in the casing to the reservoir 12.
